New Members - Tuesday, October 17, 2017

Welcome New Members!

Ms. Shields and Mr. Twidwell are two new additions to the Burrell Teaching Staff.

This year, the Burrell Education Association is pleased to welcome several new members to our ranks!

Ms. Ashley Shields comes to Huston Middle School from having grown up in Holland, NY.  A graduate of Merhurst University, Ms. Shields has spent one year at Academcy Charter School and three years with Allegheny Valley School District.  Ms. Shields will be working in our Intensive Learning Support classroom.

A familiar face to some of his former teachers, Mr. Andrew Twidwell hails from Upper Burrell, in the Burrell School District, as one of our past graduates.  After having graduated from Slippery Rock Univeristy, Mr. Twidwell found employment with Mout Pleasant Area School District.  Mr. Twidwell will be teaching Health and Physical Education at Huston Middle School.

Ms. Ashlee Peters-Roberts on one of her historical outings to Gettysburg.

A native of Freedom, PA, Ms. Ashlee Peters-Roberts will be teaching sixth grade geography this year at Huston Middle School.  She comes to Burrell with a degree in social studies education with a concentration in sociology from IUP and an MAT in advanced secondary from California University of Pennsylvania.  She has previously taught at Kiski, Franklin Regional, Upper St. Clair, and Greensburg-Salem.  A lady with many talents, Ashlee enjoys hiking, making jewelry, photography, DIY projects, cooking, historical non-fiction, and traveling to historic locales with her husband and her Brittany Spaniel.

Ms. Kulick joins the staffs at Bon Air and Stewart Elementary Schools, teaching BCIT:  Business, Communications, and Information Technology.

And finally, Ms. Melinda Kulick grew up in Charleroi, PA.  She attended California University of Pennsylvania, Robert Morris University, and Argosy University.  She previously has taught at Ringgold School District, the National Network of Digital Schools, and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh's Online Division.  She lives on a beef cattle farm with her husband Kris, the high school computer teacher at Leechburg and their two daughters Tenley (age 6) and Urban (age 2).

Welcome to the Burrell Family!

Class of 2017 BEA Scholarships Presented - Friday, May 19, 2017

Class of 2017 BEA Scholarships Presented

Ally Spohn and Benjamin Edwards accept this year's scholarships.

On Thursday, May 18, 2017, Burrell High School held its annual Senior Awards and Scholars' Banquet, celebrating the academic accomplishments of our high school students.

Annually, the Burrell Education Association offers scholarships to graduating seniors.  One scholarship is awarded to any deserving Burrell senior continuing his/her education; the other is awarded to the graduating senior of one of our own teachers.  This year, thanks to our teachers' fundraising efforts, we were able two $1500 scholarships.  And both scholarships this year stayed at Burrell.

BEA Vice-President Dan Pounds presented the awards.  From his presentation speech:

"The first scholarship goes to...one of the most well-rounded individuals that I know.  Whether it's sports, academics, community service, I have witnessed this student's perseverance - his never quit kind of attitude and relentless attention to details that are two qualities that will serve his well in his studies at Waynesburg University, where he will study early childhood and special education.  He's going to be one awesome teacher!  It's my privilege to offer (the first) BEA Scholarship to Mr. Benjamin Edwards."

"The second scholarship goes to the graduating senior of one of our district's teachers and is probably one of the hardest working students I have taught in my 15 year career.  Again, this is a very well-rounded student whose perseverance and reaction to setbacks in sports and in the classroom should be an example to both other students and adults alike.  Most of us take on challenges and as we take on more and more, the quality of our work may become less and less.  But remarkably, I believe with this student, the more she takes on, the higher the quality of her work.  A love of science must run in this family as she will be studying Bio-medical engineering and Pre-Med at Arizona State University - Tempe.  The second BEA scholarship is awarded to Miss Ally Spohn."

Ally is the daughter of Huston Middle School science teacher Mark Spohn.

Special thanks to the High School Guidance Department:  BEA members Sandy Oskin and Viet Pham as well as Guidance Department Secretary Lisa Yank for organizing a memorable evening.

We couldn't be prouder of this year's two honorees as well as all of our students who were recognized this evening.

Congratulations! - Sunday, May 14, 2017

Congratulations, Graduates!

The teachers of the Burrell Education Association extend our heartfelt best wishes to all of the graduates in the Class of 2017!

Farewell! - Friday, May 12, 2017

This year, BEA bids adieu to one of our teachers.  Mr. Ken Virostek has taught Health and Physical Education at Burrell since 1983 and will be missed by us all!

We also bid farewell to high school secretary Mrs. Kathie Spahr, a member our sister Association, the Burrell Educational Support Professionals.

We thank you all for your years of service to the kids of our district and to the Association.  Be assured that you have left a legacy of excellence on our schools, our community, and our hearts.

Best wishes in retirement!

Become a Partner for Public Education! Minimize
How to become a Partner for Public Education - Monday, April 13, 2015

Why are Pennsylvania’s public schools among the best in the nation? Because parents, community leaders, elected officials, and educators are working together as partners.

PSEA formed a community outreach program, Partners for Public Education to bring these partners together to provide them with information about public education policy in Pennsylvania, and to create connections with public schools in their communities.

There's no cost to join, and as a Partner, you will receive news about the schools in your community and opportunities to speak up about school funding cuts and other issues. Partners also receive discounts and savings at businesses nationwide.

To date, thousands have joined Partners for Public Education. And PSEA and BEA members are working to help partners understand the power of a great education.

Sign-up by click on the PPE icon above, and complete the short online form.

Please join us in advocating for public education in Lower Burrell and Pennsylvania!
